•2008 California State Budget Crisis
Mary Jane Burke, Marin County Superintendent of Schools, recommends this Spring 2008 Article by Scott Plotkin, Executive Director of California School Boards Association, Inc., on why we need to pressure our legislators not to suspend the Proposition 98 school funding guarantee for 2008-2009 when they try to balance the budget next year. The artlcle points out that a big part of the state budget problem stems from recent tax cuts (particularly the state vehicle license fee reduction), decreases in state corporate income taxes and sales taxes, and the phase-out of the federal estate tax. "It is not our fault that even with the protection of Proposition 98's minimum funding guarantee, we are still near the bottom of the country in per-pupil spending -- while still trying to meet the highest academic standards in the nation."
